DREAM DECODES
What do your dreams mean?
Understanding what God is saying in dreams
God has always spoken to His people in many ways, including through dreams. When we explore the biblical meaning of our dreams we uncover the spiritual messages, symbols, and insights that God may be revealing during the night. From Joseph to Daniel, the Bible shows us that dreams can carry divine direction, warning, and encouragement.
The Bible is filled with accounts of individuals both ordinary and extraordinary, who received divine insight, warnings, and revelations through dreams. These dreamers were not just passive sleepers; they were chosen vessels for God’s voice in the night.
Joseph (Genesis 37, 40–41) is one of the most well-known biblical dreamers. As a young man, he dreamed of leadership and purpose, though his path took him through betrayal and imprisonment. His God-given ability to interpret dreams ultimately elevated him to a place of great influence in Egypt, where he was used to save many lives. His story reminds us that dreams can reveal destiny—even when the journey seems unclear.
Daniel (Daniel 2, 4, 7) was another dream interpreter, known for his wisdom and unwavering faith. God gave him both the gift of interpreting the dreams of kings and prophetic visions of the future. Daniel’s life shows us that God reveals deep and mysterious things to those who seek Him.
Solomon (1 Kings 3) received wisdom in a dream, where God appeared and offered him anything he desired. His humble request for understanding pleased the Lord and shaped the future of Israel. This moment highlights how dreams can be a sacred place of encounter with God.
Joseph, the husband of Mary (Matthew 1:20 / 2:13) was guided through multiple dreams during a critical time. In each one, God gave him instructions to protect and provide for the Messiah. His obedience to the dreams preserved the life of Jesus in His early years, showing how divine dreams can carry urgent purpose.
Just as God used dreams to guide, protect, and reveal His will in the Bible, He still speaks today to those who are listening.
Job 33:14–16
“For God may speak in one way or another, yet we don’t perceive it. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on people as they slumber in their beds, He opens the ears of people and seals their instruction.”
To interpret a dream, using these 5 steps will help you begin to unpack what God is wanting to tell you.
Biblical Dream Interpretation Steps
- Pray for guidance.
- Write the dream in full.
- Identify symbols and their biblical meaning.
- Confirm with The Word.
- Be patient—trust God’s timing.
1: Pray for discernment
Before interpreting any dream, seek God. Ask the Holy Spirit for wisdom, just like Joseph and Daniel did.
Daniel 2:28 – “But there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries…”
Ask:
- Lord, is this dream from You?
- What are You trying to show or teach me?
2: Record the Dream in Detail
Write every detail down. There will be dreams that make sense and dreams that have seemingly random things in it. Writing them down will help you paint a picture of the message. There will also be things that have a strong sense to them. Those things are key – don’t undervalue what you saw.
- Images – What symbols, pictures, numbers etc. stood out?
- People – Who was in the dream?
- Emotions – What were you feeling?
- Actions – What happened? Was there a message or voice?
Habakkuk 2:2
“Write down the revelation and make it plain…”
3. Look for Biblical Symbols
God often uses symbolic language. Many dream elements can be found or mirrored in Scripture.
Symbol | Possible Biblical Meaning |
---|
Water | Holy Spirit, cleansing, life (John 7:38) |
Snakes | Deception, danger, Satan (Genesis 3, Luke 10:19) |
Light | Truth, God’s presence (John 8:12) |
Mountains | God’s presence, challenges (Psalm 121:1) |
Falling | Humility, judgment, instability (Proverbs 16:18) |
Vehicle | Ministry / destiny opportunities |
4. Compare the Dream to The Word
God never contradicts His Word. If a dream leads to fear, confusion, or actions against God’s commands, it is not from Him. Satan can also bring things into your thoughts. Asking the Holy Spirit to give you His revelation and discernment it key.
2 Timothy 3:16
“All Scripture is God-breathed… for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.”
5. Wait on God
Not every dream is meant to be understood immediately. Sometimes the meaning becomes clear over time. I have had dreams that I have written down 2 years ago that are only just now getting played out in the natural.
Often times God will give you something ahead of time, before you need it. It’s easy to discard a dream because it has no immediate purpose. Over time you will begin to understand how God speaks to you. Keep every dream!
Example: A Simple Dream
Dream: You are climbing a steep mountain with a heavy backpack but eventually reach the top and see light breaking through clouds.
Possible Biblical Interpretation:
- Climbing a mountain = spiritual growth or challenges in your walk with God.
- Heavy backpack = burdens or responsibilities you’re carrying.
- Light at the top = breakthrough, God’s guidance, or clarity after a season of testing.
Psalm 121:1-2 – “I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord…”
